Hispanic voter cites economy as key reason for backing Trump

(MENAFN) In the 2024 election, many Latino voters, including former Democrat Sam Negron, turned out to support Donald Trump, motivated largely by economic concerns. “I didn't like paying $7 for eggs,” Negron, a Pennsylvania state constable from the predominantly Latino city of Allentown, said. “But basically it was all his talking points… making the US a strong country again.” Negron switched to the Republican Party in 2019 after years as a Democrat.

Trump’s 2024 victory was buoyed by significant Latino support, with 46% of the community backing him—the highest percentage for a Republican in US history. However, after a year in office, signs of declining enthusiasm are appearing. New polling indicates that Latino support for Trump has fallen to 38%, down from a peak of 49% shortly after his inauguration.

The Latino electorate is vast and diverse, spanning multiple ancestries, economic situations, and population sizes, collectively forming the largest non-white voting bloc in the United States with over 36 million voters. Analysts note that Trump’s 2024 gains among Latino voters were largely driven by economic dissatisfaction during the final years of the previous administration.

A Pew survey found that 93% of Latinos who supported Trump ranked the economy as their primary concern, with issues such as violent crime and immigration far behind.
