US House Moves to Repeal Trump’s Canada Tariffs Amid Bipartisan Backing
The chamber passed the Democratic-sponsored resolution by a vote of 219 to 211. Despite the outcome, the measure is expected to face significant hurdles. If it clears the Senate, it could still be vetoed by Trump, and the House vote did not reach the threshold required to override a presidential veto.
Lawmakers in the Senate had previously taken similar action twice last year, when four Republicans joined Democrats in supporting efforts to prevent the administration from enacting tariffs on Canada.
Wednesday’s decision came shortly after a separate vote on Tuesday, when Republican Representatives Kevin Kiley of California, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and Don Bacon of Nebraska aligned with Democrats to block a procedural rule. That rule would have stopped legislators from attempting to roll back the president’s sweeping tariffs until July.
For an extended period, Republican leadership in the House had prevented votes that would directly challenge Trump’s authority to impose tariffs. However, the limitation on bringing such measures forward expired in January, opening the door to this week’s action.
In addition to Kiley, Massie, and Bacon, Representatives Dan Newhouse of Washington, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Jeff Hurd of Colorado also voted in favor of the resolution, diverging from the president’s position. Their stance may have electoral ramifications as the November midterm elections approach.
Following the vote, Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, warning critics within his party that they would "seriously suffer the consequences come Election time."
