Three Philadelphia Police Officers Hospitalized After Shooting

(MENAFN) Three Philadelphia Police Department officers were wounded in a late-night shootout in the city's Wynnefield neighbourhood on Saturday, after a 59-year-old man opened fire on them during a shooting response call, authorities said. The suspect was later pronounced dead.

The incident unfolded at approximately 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of North 54th and Arlington streets. Officers had responded to a report of a shooting in the area when the suspect — who is not believed to have been connected to the original call — approached the responding officers.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the individual began "engaging them multiple times," and that officers instructed him to stand down on multiple occasions before he drew a weapon, triggering an exchange of gunfire. Four officers discharged their weapons during the confrontation.

The three wounded officers — two patrolmen and a sergeant — are in stable condition at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, having sustained wounds to the face, hip and leg. The 59-year-old suspect was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m.

Mayor Cherelle Parker confirmed the nature of the officers' injuries, as city officials addressed reporters in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Commissioner Bethel said all three officers are in stable condition. The investigation into the full circumstances of the shooting remains ongoing.
